| 80 years after the National Socialists seized power in Austria, a study is now available for the first time that examines the Anschluss in 1938 in all districts of Tyrol and in the provincial capital. Twelve contributions analyze the rise of the NSDAP, Nazi terror and German national traditions in a border town, persecution and revenge, Gleichschaltung and propaganda. Violence and exclusion, but also sociopolitical and everyday cultural offerings were attractive to the majority of the Tyrolean population. They forged the Nazi national community together. This volume also makes this visible from an experiential-historical perspective. Beneficiaries from the circle of the Bund deutscher Mädel have their say, as do an elderly Jewish couple and a Jewish family whose extensive correspondence is now available. Many photographs and a separate photo essay open up new visual perspectives. Little-noticed public and private incidents demonstrate the contradictory, sometimes absurd effects that the political events of March 1938 had in the valleys and on the mountains of Tyrol. |
