| Willi Stigler (1903-1976) was one of the most important architects of the 20th century in Tyrol, alongside Lois Welzenbacher, Clemens Holzmeister or Franz Baumann. His work reveals an engagement with the international currents of modern architecture as well as with the regional domestic building tradition. The monograph is based on one of the most important architectural estates in the Archiv für Baukunst. Previously unknown and unpublished visual material, drawings, plans, photographs and sources from various archives are published here for the first time. In addition to a biographical section that presents the architect's most important works in the form of executed buildings and projects, the theme of residential architecture from the 1920s to the 1940s is singled out as a focal point. The most important residential buildings and residential house designs of this period are documented in detail. Another main topic is the planning and building activity of rural settlements after the Anschluss and during reconstruction, using the examples of the Messerschmitt settlement in Kematen (1940) and the rebuilt village of Grins (1946). In addition to the classification of Willi Stigler's extraordinarily high-quality œuvre in the national and international history of architecture, this work is devoted to new questions in relation to traditionalism and vernacular modernism. |
