Privat oder Stadt?

in 2016, Innsbrucker Verkehrsbetriebe (IVB) celebrated its 75th anniversary, which provided the impetus to investigate the history of its formation. In this volume, Sabine Pitscheider sheds light on the circumstances of the founding in 1941 as well as its prehistory and judicial aftermath. Events always centered on the question of who should meet the need for local public transport: profit-oriented entrepreneurs or the public sector?

Prior to the founding of IVB, Innsbruck was initially served by private transport companies, which, however, experienced increasing economic problems due to the world economic crisis in the 1930s. After the "Anschluss" of Austria to Hitler's Germany, the city of Innsbruck began to successively buy up the private companies from 1939 on. in 1941, these companies, now in public hands, were merged as the Innsbruck transport companies. Leading positions were filled by the new Nazi rulers with loyal followers.
After the end of the Second World War, the history of IVB was initially characterized by restitution proceedings against the former private entrepreneurs, who demanded the return of their company shares, which had allegedly only been sold at Druck by the regime. It was not until the lawsuits were won, the economic upswing and the constancy in management by the public authorities that the urban transport service provider gained the peace and stability it needed for steady development.
