Who can vote?
You are eligible to vote in the 2024 National Council election if you:
- have Austrian citizenship,
- are at least 16 years old on election day and
- are not disqualified from voting due to a court conviction.
Application for inclusion in the electoral register
Austrians whose main place of residence is abroad must apply to the relevant Austrian municipality by August 8, 2024 at the latest to be entered in the electoral register. Any registration made is valid for ten years and must then be renewed with a further application.
Where and when can I vote?
For the National Council election, the entire city area has been divided into a total of 154 electoral districts. You can vote from 7.30 am to 4.00 pm on election day.

It is also possible to apply for a polling card.
Postal voting by absentee ballot is not an equal alternative to voting at the polls, but is only provided for in the event of an incapacity to vote(drÃ).
If you are bedridden, you can apply for a visit by a special electoral authority. Application possible until September 27, 2024 at 12:00 noon.
How & where do I apply for a polling card?
If you are unable to visit a polling station on election day, you can apply for a polling card and vote by post. You can apply for a polling card
- online: ID Austria, passport number, photo ID or enter your personal application code (you will receive this by post from September 2) required.

Opening hours: August 29 to September 27, 2024 on working days
Monday to Thursday: 8.00-17.00 and Friday: 8.00-12.00
No written application (request card or online form) is required if you come to the polling card office in person! The application can be made verbally.
It is only possible to take the polling card for another person with a written authorization (pick-up) in connection with a signed application from the person voting.

Please note that in the case of a proxy, proof of identity must be provided for both the person making the request and the authorized person delivering it .
Preferential votes
In National Council elections, you can award preferential votes for people from the chosen party. It is possible to award one preferential vote each at federal, provincial and regional level, i.e. a total of drei preferential votes .
